Microphthalmia
Description of the Disease and Clinical Picture
Microphthalmia is a congenital anomaly. In the patient, a small eyeball is most often accompanied by a small palpebral fissure and a proportionally small orbit. The small eyeball will affect the development of the orbital bones, which will not be able to develop properly, leading to other changes in the dog (problems with the deviation of nasal structures, and even breathing problems). Microphthalmia often occurs along with other eye malformations such as persistent pupillary membranes, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, cataracts, retinal dysplasia, and colobomas of various eye structures. In some dog breeds, microphthalmia appears as part of inherited syndromes (CEA – Collie Eye Anomaly, MOD – Merle Ocular Dysgenesis).
