Ectropion

Description and Clinical Picture

Ectropion refers to the outward rolling of the eyelid, causing it to move away from the eye's surface. This leaves the eye exposed to external adverse influences, often resulting in keratoconjunctivitis. Mastiffs, Great Danes, Bloodhounds, Newfoundlands, Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, and Bulldogs are some of the dog breeds that are predisposed to ectropion due to their anatomical head, skin, and eyelid conformation. Ectropion can also occur after an injury to the eyelid that leads to scar tissue formation. It is often observed in dogs that have undergone surgical correction for entropion, where the correction was overly aggressive. Paralytic ectropion is also known, which occurs due to the paralysis of the facial nerve.

Therapy

If it presents a problem, ectropion can be permanently corrected surgically.
