Dermatophytosis
Description of the Disease and Clinical Picture
Dermatophytosis is a contagious fungal disease of the hair follicles and stratum corneum. Young or immunocompromised animals are most commonly affected. The clinical picture is highly variable, and a typical lesion consists of circular alopecia with scaling at the edges. The remaining hair appears broken and is often tangled. Other symptoms can include papules, crusts, seborrhea, erythema, paronychia, or onychodystrophy of one or more fingers. If pruritus is present, it is usually of low intensity. Dermatophytosis is a zoonotic disease, and most commonly affects people with weakened immunity.
Therapy
The diagnosis is made by examining with a Wood's lamp, direct microscopic examination of the hair, and isolating the causative agent on appropriate media. Both systemic and topical antifungal agents are used in therapy.
