Combined Entropion and Ectropion
Description of the Disease and Clinical Picture
The combined occurrence of entropion and ectropion in the same eye gives the eye a diamond-like appearance, thus it is referred to as a "diamond eye." This specific form of the eye occurs when the upper and/or lower eyelid exhibits entropion laterally and medially, and ectropion centrally. This is characteristic of certain large dog breeds that have "wrinkled" facial skin (Saint Bernard, English Mastiff, Bullmastiff). In the clinical picture of these dogs, one can notice the consequences of both ectropion and entropion: trichiasis, keratitis, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers.
Treatment
Most dogs don't experience any issues. If clinical symptoms appear and can't be managed with medication therapy, surgical intervention is considered, but only when the dog has reached its full physical form. In young dogs, temporary correction is achieved by placing everting sutures. Surgical correction usually requires more complex oculoplastic procedures, which should be performed by a trained specialist with adequate experience in the surgical treatment of these patients. Simple surgical procedures for everting the eyelids have a high rate of failure in controlling this condition.
